Gerard Egan’s Skilled Helper Model of counselling provides a solution focused basis for effective life coaching. There are many obstacles that prevent us from listening actively (and learning). As a listener, friend, parent, manager, employee, or life coach, it's important to be aware of these barriers, many of which are simply bad habits. This is part 1 of 2.

In this video, we discuss some of the barriers that undermine personal growth. Sometimes, we’ll not even be aware of these barriers and limit our personal growth unknowingly. We all have various learning styles and preferences, and here we will explore why it's essential for life coaching practitioners to understand how ‘different people’ learn differently.
This is the story of 'Chris'. Some new coaches, driven by passion, say "yes" to everyone who asks for their help, only to find that not everyone who claims to want help has actually taken the responsibility to help themselves and play a crucial part within the coaching process. Saying ‘yes' to the wrong people is the same as saying ‘no’ to the right people.
It's one thing learning how to guide other people through the Achology life coaching process, then its something else entirely, recognising who it's good to invest our time into and who are the kind of people who will just waist our time. This is the story of 'Cory'.

Our practice, our day-to-day interactions, and our lives in general can be streamlined by integrating a standard. Whenever we live according to this standard, it is likely our connections with others will be transformed through the process. In this video, we discuss a standard for highly effective life coaching (which you can choose to either accept or reject).
Life coaches are in the business of enhancing relationships, so if you intend on going into the relationship business, you'd better take the time to understand how the quality of your relationships can be maximized as soon as possible. In this video, we will discuss the essential conditions for relational practice.
When people organize and synthesize information gathered by their senses, they perceive. The same information can be perceived differently by different individuals depending on a number of factors. Understanding how to manage perception means that we also understand how to effectively manage people.
The phrase ‘life balance’ was first used in the UK in the late 1970s, and in the US in the mid-1980s. However, it has taken on a new meaning with the advent of technology, which allows those who work to remain connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In this video, we offer you a basis for building balance into all areas of your life.
This video features Kain conducting an 'Initial Consultation' session with Karen, showing how you can use the Life Balance workbook to consider what your client's needs are when determining whether or not they would benefit from a succession of life coaching sessions.

We all experience emotions. Some people refer to them as 'illnesses', while others refer to them as 'conditions'. We will forever be controlled by our emotions if we don't learn to control them. As life coaches, we are always responsible for helping our clients grow into a deeper understanding of themselves.
A person's assets and liabilities are not only the things he or she owns, but also the value that his or her work generates, the people around him or her, the pleasure and disappointment that take place in life, and the reward they receive for being who they are. Here we'll talk about how to help our clients OWN their current assets and liabilities.
Our assets are the things that add value to our lives, while our liabilities are the things (or people) that take value from our lives. A conversation takes place between Kain and Karen regarding her assets and liabilities, and how this understanding can be incorporated into the early phases of the life coaching process. This video is part 1 of 2.

As you begin coaching people, you will realize that every problem or issue they face is the result of a limiting belief that they hold about themselves, their capabilities, or their ability to learn and solve problems. There are two ways in which people categorically define themselves. One of these ways is wholesome, and the other way isn't.
The more we learn about the process through which people grow to develop their individual beliefs in life, the better we are able to understand how to interrupt these beliefs and at the same time begin to modify them. In the following videos, you will be able to understand this in more detail. The first part of a two-part series.

Each debilitating emotion, every fear, every frustration, and every action (or inaction) we take is linked to the quality of the thoughts that occupy our minds every day. Our ability to help people better manage their thoughts can also help them to better manage other aspects of their lives. This video is part 1 of 2.

Our role as coaches can sometimes be characterized by the fact that we have to work with people who are resistant to change. There is no denying that change is not always easy, but the truth is that it's an inevitable part of life that will happen to all of us whether, or not, we want it to. In this video, we ask the first in a series of self-reflection questions.
People tend to consider themselves good listeners without understanding the crucial differences between hearing and listening. In this video, we ask the second question in a series of self-reflection questions. While we are all born with the ability to hear, the ability to listen is something else - a skill that takes time and patience to develop.
None of us likes having presumptions made of us, or having things assumed of us that are incorrect or inaccurate, yet, so often we can be guilty of being the kind of person for others that we wouldn’t even remotely want to have them be for ourselves. In this video, we ask the third in this series of self-reflection questions.
In order to get the best results with life coaching, one needs to look at a future-focused, goal-oriented approach that stresses that it is more important to focus on seeking solutions than looking at problems. All of this will be explained in the next couple of videos. Part 1 of 2.

Those who step out of their comfort zone shape the world. It is common for people to be too scared to take a risk for fear of the ramifications. What if I get fired? Who will ridicule me? For our life coaching practice, it's important to understand the three life zones that everyone can progress through. This video is part 1 of 2.

Taking personal responsibility for our actions in the world and letting go of blame is the path to genuine change. The majority of people spend much time talking about making changes, but not all of them actually do. There are times when we can easily fool ourselves into believing things are changing, when nothing has really changed at all.
What is the process of coaching? The purpose of coaching is to provide continuous, specific feedback in a supportive manner that enables a person to learn, improve and develop. Positivity is the result of a process. A person can be influenced to improve their performance or behavior. We deconstruct the entire life coaching journey in this video. This is part 1 of 2.

The pursuit of goals, pleasures, and objectives is far from the only purpose of life. In the same way, life coaching involves so much more than just meeting goals and feeling better about where one is (relationally, professionally, spiritually or emotionally). To be a successful life coach, one must understand the very essence of human nature. This is part 1 of 2.

When a life coach understands the process through which people grow and mature, and can distinguish when some people get ‘stuck in a rut’ or ‘lodged in the process’, it can be relatively easy to guide people accordingly. Getting a solid understanding of this important teaching is essential for any coach who wants to work with clients in the future.
This is the 4th self-reflection question. Self-reflection questions are questions that help you to reflect upon who you are. A lot like journaling prompts, self-reflection questions help you tap into your thoughts and emotions. They help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and your core beliefs and values so that you can get to know yourself better.

Coaches must understand the human experience to provide a substantial level of support to those who are developing in maturity and growth. Unfortunately, many untrained coaches do not understand emotional health to the extent that they often focus on the negative aspects of human experience, which leads their clients around in circles. This is part 1 of 2.

The act of time travel is something that we all do every single day of the week, as we recall our pasts and then imagine our futures. In truth, much of the problem that many individuals struggle with is that they become so engrossed in either the past or the future, that they fail to appreciate the wonders of life's moment-to-moment experiences.
There are times when our experience of life needs a little perspective, and there's no better way to accomplish this than by practicing the exercise that Kain describes in the video. We have now reached the end of section 2.
When you decide to implement a coaching culture in your family, team, social group, or even your organization, the first step is deciding what type of coaching you will use and implement. As life coaches, it's crucial that we understand the difference between directive and non-directive styles of coaching. This is part 1 of 2.

This video provides you with a number of questions that you can ask yourself (or your clients) to determine whether they are open, receptive, and willing to change. For maximum impact, we encourage you to embrace the questions and answer honestly.
We all go through "stuff" in our lives. Ultimately, it's not what happens to us that makes a difference to most people, but how we respond to our life experiences that determines whether we become helpless victims or empowered victors. There is a real choice here, regardless of whether our clients believe it or not.
This video guides us through another self-reflection exercise with profound insights that will be beneficial for you in your future coach-to-client relationships.
A psychological tool created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham back in 1955, the Johari window is a tool for individual analysis. It is a simple and useful tool intended to help people gain a better understanding of themselves and their relationships with others.
In a close, harmonious relationship, both parties should be in sync with one another, they should understand each other's feelings, and they should be able to communicate effectively. In this video, we'll discuss the relationship between rapport and relatability.
We hope that by now you have recognized the importance of rapport in creating a mutually beneficial relationship between a helping practitioner and his or her clients/audience. In this demonstration video, you will see how influential a rapport-driven relationship can be.
In this video, we conclude section 3 with a self-reflection exercise that allows you to reflect on the depth of the relationship you currently have in your social, business, and even personal relationships. It is impossible to have a relationship without rapport, as without rapport, there can be no trust, and without trust, there can be no meaningful connection.
Our beliefs not only form the shape of our lives, but they are a force that has an impact on every part of society that we interact with. As with anything relevant to our lives, however, the only issue is that beliefs aren't always accurate depictions of what reality entails.
As the belief system is not innate, how does it develop? In the process of growing, our ideas take shape in four phases. In an article by Morris Massey, the social scientist describes periods of our lives during which we are shaped by our beliefs.
Søren Kierkegaard spent much of his life reflecting on what it means to be authentic. It was his aim to pique the interest of nineteenth-century Danes. Through public engagement, he mainly engaged fellow philosophers and theologians. His work is studied by diverse cultures and backgrounds who are interested in becoming ‘more fully human’. This is part 1 of 2.

It takes great courage to believe in the entire truth and, in turn, follow through with it, regardless of circumstances. This is considered by some as a conflict with compassion, but real compassion requires that we respect people with all viewpoints. Combining conviction and compassion gives you the force you need to make a difference.
Limiting Beliefs: What Are They? Those who believe their beliefs are absolute are said to hold limiting beliefs. The most detrimental effects of limiting beliefs on a person's life is that they prevent people from advancing and growing on a personal and professional level. In this video, we discuss some questions to ask for sourcing limiting beliefs.
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate how to use the limiting beliefs questions (as discussed in the previous video) to assist a client in becoming self-actualised and enlightened. Questions to Source Limiting Beliefs Part 1 of 2.

Kain and Karen discuss what they learned through Karen's previous demonstrations in this video. This video deconstructs and unpacks a few things Karen discovered.
People are prone to labeling themselves based on the characteristics they display. In some cases, a label may accurately reflect the person's current behavior, but it also implies that the behavior is a reflection of the person's true identity. This is never true. One of the issues that many people have with their identity labels is that they sometimes conform to them.
Life is sustained by only one set of enduring foundations. What makes us who we are. Most people spend a lifetime trying to hide their 'core' self from the world. Liberation involves being aware of our inherent qualities without letting our actions determine who we are. When we become confident in who we are, we become free to embrace who we aren’t. Part 1 of 2.

Connecting to others is the root cause of nearly all human problems, including mental health, drug dependency, violence, crime, school failure, and spousal abuse, just to name a few. Understanding choice theory is essential if we want to be effective life coaches.
What is it that keeps people from reaching their highest potential in life and fully living out the hopes, dreams, and aspirations they have for themselves. We would like to introduce you to the 'good enough' principle!
Beliefs shape our lives in a similar way to clothes we can wear or take off at any time. The first step in removing your negative core belief is to examine the evidence that underlies it. Do you have evidence for this view of yourself? In what ways do you justify this deeply held negative belief? The workbook will prove useful to a lot of life coaching clients.
Our core values are the principles that guide our behavior. A core set of values creates a solid guide for identifying our direction and achieving our goals. There are many different values that can all be equally important to us in certain situations, which often leads to conflict. Kain introduces you to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in this video. Part 1 of 2.

The foundation of our life coaching skills is derived from positive psychology. The ability to adapt and be resourceful are considered intrinsic survival skills, as is the ability to change behavior. Kain introduces you to a useful scale that can be used to appreciate how no behavioural patterns are rigidly unchangeable in this video.
For people to be influenced to change, an environment must be created where their ability to change and the value of the change must be greater than the cost and risk associated with it. Kain and Karen discuss the idea that people will change in any aspect of their lives, as long as their desire to change has become greater than the desire to remain the same.
Educating ourselves about our core values is one of the most significant endeavors that can be undertaken if we intend to coach or assist others in life, or if we hope to lead harmonious and well-balanced lives that allow us to be both effective and wise with our time. Let's take a moment to review the entire Life Coaching process. Prepare your notebooks!
While you may not yet have answers to all of the questions you started the course with, we hope that by now you have begun to find some. Be sure to download the core values workbook that can be found in the course's additional materials section.
Have you ever been frustrated by how someone else interprets your words or actions in a way you didn't mean? Maybe you've found yourself angry at someone else's comment or action, and assumed they must be acting against you? Using this teaching, you can make stronger conclusions, or challenge other people's findings based on facts and reality.
In the communication process, listening is the ability to receive and interpret messages accurately. A key component of effective communication is listening. Words are easily misunderstood when one is unable to listen carefully. Therefore, as life coaches, we must understand The Hot-O-Meter of Effective Listening!
Pleasing everyone is an impossible goal. Becoming All Things To all People - What this does NOT mean is that we are to compromise with the world in order to fit in. Rather than reacting to people, we can learn how to respond, which enables us to maintain a connection with people from all walks of life - without compromising our integrity

Additional tools, resources, and tips to make life as a Life Coach a little easier!
During communication, listening is about interpreting messages and obtaining accurate information. Effective communication is largely a matter of skills and knowledge. Learning how to listen to people is among the most valuable investments we can make in our lifetime.
Being immediate, being able to respond in the moment, is an essential part of the skills needed by a life coach, and is valuable in helping to identify feelings, both in ourselves and in others. It focuses on using the here and now and on the coaching relationship to explore what the other person may be communicating about his or her world.
Generally, silence means the absence of any kind of sound. Communication, on the other hand, sees it as the absence of speech. So, the absence of speech doesn't mean that the person is not communicating with the other person. Silence can be a very powerful form of communication. S.I.L.E.N.C.E. - How OK are you with it?
Communication based on immediate feedback is one of the best skills we can develop in order to build and strengthen our coaching relationships. Kain initiates a discussion with Karen and responds only to her communications with an immediate response.
In this session, Kain and Karen deconstruct the conversation they had in the previous video, and will hopefully allow you to appreciate just how powerful immediacy can be, when being on the receiving end of it in a life coaching relationship.
When do you pay attention to the depth with which you are listening to someone? Listening is critical to building strong coaching relationships and improving communication skills. During the video, we discuss the four levels of listening, how you can tell with which level you are listening, and how you can improve your listening skills.
The notion that people favor their own kind while discriminating against out-groups is oversimplistic, but that's a relatively accurate portrayal of how prejudice works. The video will explain the 'hierarchy of judgment' and how we measure ourselves against others.
Chunking can be a highly effective and useful tool in communications, mediation, and negotiation when used properly. An effective communicator can carefully facilitate rapport, agreement, persuasion and create convincing mutual understanding by listening to (and eventually influencing) the level or way that another person is operating on.
Chunking in communications, mediations, and negotiations can be highly useful and effective. In this video, Kain demonstrates chunking up and down questions with Karen.
By shifting our perceptions, we are able to see events and situations from alternative viewpoints. Cognitive flexibility and perception shifting are so closely related that they are often referred to as the same thing. Cognitive flexibility refers to the ability to adapt to change, whereas perceptual shifting is the process that makes it possible to do so.
Perceptual shifting refers to the ability to adapt to changes by seeing and understanding the world differently. Perceptual shifting is the process by which it is possible to adapt to changes. Using this process, Kain will show how life coaches can help clients to see things from different perspectives.
Behaviour traits and tendencies are good things to be aware of when it comes to knowing one’s self. Uffe Elbaek’s public opinion barometer is a good starting point. Keep in mind that you will be subject to these four perspectives: 1) how you see yourself, 2) how you would like to see yourself, 3) how others see you, and 4) how others would like to see you.
Frame, also referred to as frame of reference, is a complex schema of unquestioned beliefs, values, etc. that we employ when trying to make sense of things. By changing any part of the frame (hence "reframing"), the probability of the meaning inferred will likely change. Conversational 'reframing' is one of the most useful tools a life coach can use. Part 1 of 2.

Successful people share one thing in common - they all set high goals and do whatever it takes to attain them. In order to accomplish your goals, you must be able to understand the different types of goals, how to set them, and have a goal-setting strategy. Now, let's talk about the sweet spot for goal setting...
Life can seem chaotic sometimes; one minute we may appear directionless, then the next, there are so many goals we aim for. When we (or clients) have an overwhelming list of goals, we may not know how to begin. Creating a hierarchy of your goals is the way to go in these circumstances, and this video will teach you how.
You can use this workbook to help your clients clarify their vision, goals, and the actions needed to achieve them. The key is to keep it simple, actionable and exciting. Every great accomplishment or transformation started with the decision to make a change and follow up with tiny steps each day. Let this workbook be the start of something great ....
In our busy lives, we don't always take the time to examine what's not working. We rarely ask ourselves deep, probing questions about what truly drives us. Take a look at this workbook and answer the questions to start getting clarity about the steps you (or your clients) can take now towards a life and career you'll be passionate about.
Mind maps are a good way to organize and represent ideas. It's a 'visual' thinking exercise that can help structure the information already in your head. It will help you to analyse our ideas, comprehend new strategies, recall what we already know and generate new ideas.
The Action Planning Workbook was developed as a self-guided tool for supporting planning initiatives centered around the relationship between a life coach and a client. This action planning system can be used to follow through with a facilitated workshop or stand alone.
The Eisenhower Matrix is a productivity, prioritization, and time-management system that helps you categorize a list of tasks according to their urgency and importance. We can use The Eisenhower Matrix Productivity Method to help shift our clients from 'firefighting' into a position where they can move forward more effectively in all aspects of their lives.
Every day, we are faced with various complex decisions. Life is full of choices and we must be able to make them. However, what is the most effective way to make decisions that will result in the best possible outcomes? With an ever-growing wealth of research on the topic, decision making is being shaped into a discipline that can aid greatly in guiding our choices.
As human beings, we are prone to compare ourselves to others and often find we end up falling short on some level even when we are striving for the best. The Rubber Band Model is a method used to choose between two options when faced with a dilemma. It can be empowering as well as discouraging at a given time to have a variety of options to choose from: it all depends on our perspective as well as our attitude towards the choices we face.
