Welcome to my free WordPress course for beginners.
Throughout the different lessons, I will show you how to build a website using WordPress, step by step.
I really hope you like it,
Martie.
In this lesson, we'll cover the 3 things we need to build our website:
1. A Content Management System – We'll be using WordPress.
2. Domain Name – What people will type into their browser to visit our website.
3. Web Hosting – Where the different files that make up our website will be stored online.
In this lesson, we'll be setting up a domain name and web hosting for our website.
I recommend using Bluehost for this.
Bluehost are a well known hosting company, with affordable pricing and great support.
They also offer a free domain name with all of their hosting packages.
And, they're even recommended by WordPress themselves as one of their top choices for hosting.
In this lesson, we'll be installing WordPress onto our new hosting account and link it to our domain name.
This will only take a few minutes to do, using Bluehost's one-click WordPress installer.
In this lesson, we'll be navigating between the WordPress Dashboard and our website.
We will also see what WordPress looks like when we first install it.
Note: Don't worry if your website looks a little different than mine, WordPress sometimes change up the default theme. This will NOT affect the tutorial in any way, as we'll be changing theme soon.
In this lesson, we'll be deleting the demo plugins that come pre-installed on WordPress.
WordPress Plugins are basically like apps we can install, to add extra functions to our website, that WordPress doesn't come with by default.
In this lesson, we'll be installing a WordPress Theme, which will change the entire look of our WordPress website.
For this course, I chose the super popular GeneratePress theme.
GeneratePress is the perfect theme for beginners and pros alike.
We can use it to build almost any type of website (business, personal, blog, etc).
It's also super customizable and easy to use.
Note: You can always change your theme again later if you like, without affecting any of your main content or pages. But, not all themes are the same and you may lose some customization options. Although, I really do like the GeneratePress theme and I hope you do to.
In this lesson, we'll be accessing the WordPress Theme Options.
Which is where we can customize the look and style of our website.
In this lesson, we'll be going through the different "Site Identity" options.
These include:
Changing our website's Title and Tagline
Uploading a logo image
Uploading a site icon
In this lesson, we'll be changing up the different colors used on our website.
In this lesson, we'll be assigning the different fonts used on our website.
In this lesson, we'll be creating the navigation menu and adding the different pages we want on our website.
Note: You can add as many pages as you like to your website, but I would recommend adding a page called "Home", as I we'll be using this to replace the blog that's on our homepage by default.
In this lesson, we'll be assigning our website's homepage.
Which is the first page a visitor will land on when they visit our domain name.
In this lesson, we'll be adding different types of content to our website's pages.
This includes:
Text
Headings
Lists
Images
Clickable Links
In this lesson, we'll be covering how to update the main email address that's linked to our website.
This is going to be the email address used for our contact form too, which we'll be creating in the next lesson.
In this lesson, we'll be creating a contact form for our website.
This way our visitors will be able to send us a message if they need to.
And we'll get the message sent to us as an email.
As WordPress doesn't have the ability to create a contact form, built into it.
We're going to be installing a free plugin to create it.
The plugin we'll be using is called WPForms.
In this lesson, we'll be covering how to hide certain page titles from view.
This is totally optional, but I think it's good to do this for the home page.
In this lesson, we'll be covering how to add content to our website's sidebar.
The sidebar is the part that runs down the right hand side of our website, and it appears the same on every page.
In this lesson, we'll take a quick look over what we did to build our website.
